What are water softener anti-flood systems?

When we talk about water softening, the safety issue cannot be overlooked. In the case of devices that operate most of the time without our supervision, such as water softeners, it is crucial to install appropriate protections. Among them, it is worth mentioning anti-flooding systems, which are designed to protect our house from possible flooding.

Anti-flooding systems in water softeners are a set of various solutions that help prevent situations in which the device would leak or leak water. Their task is to protect the house against significant material damage resulting from leaks of the softener or irregularities in its operation. These smart systems are increasingly standard in modern water softeners.

By choosing a water softener with an anti-flooding system, we gain, above all, peace of mind. Thanks to it, we can be sure that in the event of a device failure, our house will not be flooded. What's more, such solutions are often combined with alarm systems, informing us of any irregularities in the operation of the softener.

Types of anti-flooding systems in water softeners

Depending on the manufacturer and model of the softener, anti-flooding systems may differ from each other. One of the most popular solutions is a float valve that automatically closes the water supply to the device when a certain level of water in the tank is reached. This works like a toilet flush.

If the float fails, there is usually a second anti-flooding safety feature, an overflow elbow. A hose leads from the elbow to the sewage system. If there is too much water in the tank, it will overflow and end up in the channel.

Another protection (but not integrated with the water softener) are anti-flood sensors integrated with the smart home system. This solution is usually combined with a solenoid valve installed behind the main water meter, which automatically shuts off the water supply to the house when a leak is detected.

Heads based on solenoid valves, due to the specificity of their operation, also protect the installation against flooding. In the event of a power failure in the house, the water softener solenoid valve closes and the water bypasses the device. There is no chance that the water softener will jam during regeneration (e.g. the brine tank filling process) and lead to flooding of the boiler room.
