How to clean the water softener injector?

Inżektor głowicy Clack

The injector in a water softener plays an important role in the resin regeneration process. Its main function is to create a vacuum that draws the salt solution (also called brine solution) from the brine tank and redirects it to the resin tank. Thanks to this, sodium ions from the salt replace calcium and magnesium ions on the resin, which effectively "regenerates" the resin and restores its ability to soften water.

However, like other softener components, the injector may become blocked by sediment and suspensions that may enter the system. When this happens, the efficiency of the water softener decreases, which ultimately leads to hard water being delivered to your home. Therefore, it is important to check and clean the injector regularly to ensure proper operation of the device.

Injector cleaning process

Cleaning your water softener injector is a process you can do yourself if you are reasonably experienced in maintaining your device. First you need to locate the injector. It is usually located at the back of the water softener head, although the location may vary depending on the model. Then you need to disconnect the softener from the power supply and close the water supply valve. After that, remove the injector cover.

After removing the cover, pull out the injector, taking care not to damage any parts. The best way to clean the injector is to soak it in a vinegar solution or a special citric acid-based cleaner, which are excellent for removing deposits. After soaking for a few hours, gently clean all the holes in the injector using a fine wire or needle, but be careful not to damage them.

Injector cleaning – best practices

When cleaning the injector, remember that some water softener models may require special tools to disassemble and install the injector. Make sure you have the right tools and instructions before you start.

Once cleaning is complete, reinstall the injector, making sure all parts are properly installed and there are no leaks. Turn on the power and open the water inlet valve, then manually run a regeneration cycle to test the operation of the injector.

Remember that regular injector cleaning is a key part of keeping your water softener in top condition. If you still notice that the injector is damaged or does not work properly despite cleaning, it may be necessary to replace it with a new part. In this case, contact a professional service to ensure proper diagnosis and repair.

Final note: Remember that no matter how well you understand how your water softener works, there is always a risk that improper cleaning could damage the device. That's why we always recommend hiring a professional service technician if you're not confident in your skills.
