A water softener is a device specifically designed to reduce water hardness through an ion exchange process. This process involves replacing the calcium and magnesium ions that cause water hardness with sodium ions. The result is water that is less harmful to pipes, appliances, skin and hair.

Regeneration of the softener, which is a key step in maintaining the efficiency of the device, consists in rinsing the resin bed with a solution of common salt (called brine), which replaces the "hard" ions from the resin with sodium ions. It is worth noting that the water softener does not remove contaminants such as bacteria, viruses or heavy metals. For this purpose, other water treatment methods are necessary, such as carbon filters or reverse osmosis systems.
