Manganese is one of the elements that often appear in our water. Although it is not directly related to water hardness, its presence can affect the quality of the water we use every day. The water softener, thanks to its specificity of operation, has the ability to reduce manganese in water. But is a water softener the right tool to remove manganese?

The principle of operation of a water softener and manganese

Water softeners use a process called ion exchange. In this process, the calcium and magnesium ions in the water are replaced by sodium ions, which leads to a decrease in water hardness. This action is possible thanks to a special ion exchange resin, which is the main element of the softener.

The ion exchange bed of the softener is constructed in such a way that it has the ability to "capture" various types of metal ions, including manganese. This means that the water softener can theoretically reduce the manganese in the water. However, despite this ability, a water softener is not an ideal solution for removing manganese from water.

Risks of removing manganese with a water softener

While a water softener can technically remove manganese, it is not a recommended solution. Prolonged and intensive removal of manganese by the water softener can lead to overloading of the ion exchange bed. When the bed is overloaded with manganese, its ability to exchange ions drastically decreases. As a result, water with increased hardness and excess manganese gets into our installation.

When the filter does not fulfill its function, it becomes visible on the fittings in the form of reddish stains, dirty shower seals, sediment in the kettle, etc. For this reason, although the water softener has the potential to remove manganese, it is recommended to use dedicated solutions for this purpose. such as manganese filters.

Effective methods of removing manganese from water

When it comes to effective methods of removing manganese from water, a combination of processes such as pre-aeration and catalytic bed filtration is particularly important.

First, the process begins with aeration of the water, which is essentially an oxidation process. In this phase, the manganese (Mn2+) molecules are exposed to the air (more precisely, the oxygen in the air), which leads to the oxidation of the manganese to a higher oxidation state (Mn4+). This oxidation reaction converts the manganese into a water-insoluble form, making it much easier to remove later in the process. In practice, aeration is usually done before water is introduced into the booster system.

After the aeration stage, the water is directed to filtration on catalytic beds. Catalytic beds contain substances that accelerate chemical reactions - in this case the adsorption of manganese. Adsorption is the process by which molecules (such as Mn4+) adhere to the surface of another substance - here, a catalytic bed. Thanks to this, manganese is 'captured' from the water, which allows you to obtain clean, manganese-free water.
