The first devices were quite bulky and required a significant amount of work during installation and maintenance. Thanks to advances in materials science, modern softeners have become compact, easy to install and operate.   4. CO2-based water softeners: These modern systems use carbon dioxide to reduce water hardness by binding minerals in the form of carbonates, which are easily soluble in water. While they are eco-friendly and do not add extra sodium to the water, they can be more expensive to run.

It's worth noting that while many of the above alternatives may be effective to some extent, traditional salt water softeners still offer the most comprehensive solution to water hardness in homes and businesses.
